One of the videos produced by the channel’s staff, however, has become the target of a recent copyright strike by Nintendo.

The video removed from the Did You Know Gaming channel talked about Heroes of Hyrule, a spin-off of The Legend of Zelda series pitched by Retro Studios to Nintendo almost 20 years ago for the Nintendo DS, one of Nintendo’s most popular consoles. With a similar style to Final Fantasy Tactics, the game would focus on three heroes tasked with rescuing Link after he was captured while trying to rescue Princess Zelda. The idea was rejected by Nintendo before any prototype gameplay was even completed.
On Twitter Did You Know Gaming’s announcement of the removal of the Heroes of Hyrule video for copyright generated dissatisfaction from followers, who reacted to the message with over 800 comments and over 9,000 retweets. The Did You Know Gaming team also expressed their frustration and sharply criticized the strike issued by Nintendo, to the point of saying that the removal of the video is a slap in the face for the preservation of video game history. The team also said they are exploring options to restore the video. Nintendo Power scans were recently removed from the Internet Archive possibly for the same reason.
Being a Nintendo fan is a life marked by ups and downs. The company has produced iconic consoles like the GameCube and Nintendo 64, which have marked generations of gamers. There is no shortage of examples of games released by Nintendo that are beloved to this day such as Ocarina of Time, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and F-Zero. However, the company’s strict property protection policy has been known to lead to such episodes as the removal of hundreds of Nintendo fan games. We can only wait and see if the team of Did You Know Gaming will succeed in restoring the removed video.
