Digital versions of board games are nothing new, as there have been many beloved tabletop games made digital for game consoles in the past, including Catan on Switch, Carcassone, and Pandemic. For the upcoming Console Edition, Dovetail Games and Nomad Games are collaborating to bring Catan to even more gaming platforms.

Catan will be available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles in 2023. A more precise launch date will be announced at a later time. The Console Edition features a variable and dynamic board with Catan’s familiar hexagonal tiles in 3D and roaming NPCs and animals. In solo mode, players can test their wits against AI with different aims and play styles. Playable tutorials will help familiarize new players with the game’s mechanics. By completing challenges, the player can earn in-game cosmetic rewards.

The Console Edition will also feature couch co-op and online multiplayer modes. Up to four people will be able to play this digital base game version of Catan. During local play, players can discreetly track their resources and keep track of the cards in their hand by synchronizing their phones with the game. Multiplayer will utilize a ranking system to match up players worldwide who are at a similar skill level. Further information about multiplayer will be released later this year.

Catan enthusiasts may be wondering if pre-orders are available, but players will have to wait. Those interested can wishlist the Console Edition by visiting the PlayStation or Xbox store page. This will notify players when the game can be pre-ordered.

Catan’s foray into the digital world may entice other board game publishers to release a console version for their games as well. Some board games similar to Catan and other board games in general have already made the expansion to a virtual platform. For example, Ticket to Ride has an online version available on the App Store, Google Play Store, and Steam. Similar competitive strategy board games may find success on the PlayStation or Xbox consoles.
