Dissidia Final Fantasy NT’s release has been a long time coming. The fighting game, which features characters from every single major main series Final Fantasy title on its roster, originally launched in Japanese arcades in 2015. A limited, invite-only closed beta in August was the first opportunity to play Dissidia Final Fantasy NT on PlayStation 4. The wait has been long and exhausting, but patience is about to be rewarded.

Square Enix has said that final details for Dissidia Final Fantasy NT’s open beta will be revealed in the weeks to come. That means that the characters, levels, and story content available in the beta will have to remain a mystery for the time being. If it’s anything like Japan’s open beta, which starts today, it’ll be split into three different “phases” with a rotating selection of characters from a pool of 15.

What likely beta players are hoping for even more than a robust roster selection, however, is reliable servers. The single most common criticism of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT’s closed beta was the consistent disconnects in online matchmaking. It’s not uncommon for betas to stress test their matchmaking servers, so disconnects should be expected, but that won’t stop anxious fans from hoping for launch-like server conditions.

Open beta, with its likely server hitches, will simply have to do until Dissidia Final Fantasy NT’s official launch. Expect more information leading up to January 12.
